Businesses who think that they need to be everywhere to ensure that they are being seen! Read on to find out why your businesses doesn’t need to be active on every platform and the reasons why!
When thinking about the main social media networks available to have a presence on, there are the four traditional social networking platforms. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
We know that there are many other social media platforms available to businesses such as Snapchat, YouTube, Pinterest and in fact many more we’ve not mentioned. We’re just going to focus on what we regard to be the four main ones.
The most important part of choosing your businesses social media platforms is considering who your audience is. When considering your audience, you need to answer a question. What does my ideal client/customer look like? Once you know who they are, you need to consider which social media platform they might spend their time on.
To give an example, think about a clothing business. This clothing business retails reasonably priced fashion aimed at 18-30 year old males and females. It is a B2C (Business to Consumer) business. It is highly unlikely that this audience demographic spends the majority of the time that they spend on social media scrolling through LinkedIn. This audience is on Facebook and Instagram. The perfect places for these businesses to share visual content to show what they sell.
An Telecommunications and IT Support business who only specialise in B2B services (Business to Business) would likely not find their audience on Instagram. Their target demographic are business owners and decision makers, who are more likely to spend their time on LinkedIn and possibly Twitter. Facebook won’t hurt for these types of businesses either (More on Facebook later)
Do you have enough high quality content coming through your business to spread over 4 social media platforms at least once everyday. High quality content that will be sure to have your audience engaging with you regularly? If the answer is no, then choosing which of the social media platforms you should be spending the most time on is even more important.
Time is precious, everyone wishes there were more hours in the day! As Social Media Managers, we know that time management is important. Social media is time consuming! It takes time to curate, caption and schedule high quality, meaningful and engagement worthy content. If you are doing this process over and over again for each social network you are on, then you are likely to be spending a lot of time on social media. Time which could be better invested doing something more important within your business.
Think carefully about the social media platforms your audience is using. Focus your time, energy and content on those platforms. By doing this, you are focusing your time, energy and content in the right places, rather than throwing out irrelevant stuff to people who are possibly never going to buy from your business.
Unless you have a dedicated in-house social media manager, who’s main job role is to manage all of the social media accounts within the business or you outsource and hire an agency like Social+ to manage your social media accounts for you, spreading yourself too thin across too many social networks may mean that not enough high quality content is being put out to the people who form your audience.
Facebook – It’s still alive!
Whether or not you think your audience is on Facebook, or even if it’s not the main social media platform you want to use, having a presence on facebook is an absolute must for businesses.
Search engines will use your social media presence on Facebook when crawling the world wide web for search results.
Despite the popular, yet completely unfounded claim that “Facebook is dead!” it is still the most widely used social media platform today! If you have an advertising budget, even better, as in our professional opinion, the sophistication in audience targeting in Facebook advertising is far superior to its competitor social media platforms.
