Your homepage might be losing leads, but that does not mean you need a full redesign. Small, targeted homepage fixes can make a noticeable difference to how many visitors get in touch. These seven changes are practical enough to implement this week, without rebuilding anything from scratch.

Most homepage problems come down to clarity: visitors cannot quickly tell what you do, who you help, or what they should do next. Fix those, and conversions often improve.

1. Make Your Headline Specific

Generic headlines like ‘Welcome to Our Website’ or ‘Quality Service You Can Trust’ do not tell visitors anything useful. Your headline should explain what you do and who you do it for – in plain language.

A good homepage headline answers two questions: what does this business do, and is it relevant to me? If a visitor has to scroll or click to find out, you have already lost some of them. Specificity builds confidence. ‘Accounting for North East Construction Firms’ tells you more than ‘Professional Accounting Services’.

2. Add a Clear Call to Action Above the Fold

Visitors should see what you want them to do without scrolling. If your contact button or enquiry form is buried at the bottom of the page, many people will never reach it.

Place a clear call to action, ‘Get a Quote’, ‘Book a Call’, ‘Send Us a Message’, where it is visible immediately. Make the button stand out visually. Do not make people hunt for how to contact you.

3. Remove Clutter and Competing Messages

Homepages often try to say everything at once: services, values, history, testimonials, latest news. The result is a page that feels overwhelming and unfocused.

Prioritise ruthlessly. Your homepage should guide visitors toward one or two key actions. Everything else can live on other pages. If a section does not help visitors understand what you do or encourage them to get in touch, consider removing it.

4. Add Trust Signals Where They Matter

Visitors decide quickly whether they trust a business. Trust signals, client logos, accreditations, reviews, or industry memberships, help build credibility at a glance.

Place these near your call to action or in a visible section of your homepage. A row of recognisable client logos or a Google review rating can reassure visitors that other people have trusted you and been satisfied.

5. Check Your Mobile Experience

Many visitors will see your homepage on a phone first. If your mobile layout is cluttered, slow, or hard to navigate, you are losing leads before they even read your content.

Test your homepage on a phone. Is the headline readable? Is the call to action easy to tap? Does the page load quickly? Small mobile improvements often have a disproportionate impact on enquiries.

6. Speed Up Your Page Load

Slow pages frustrate visitors. If your homepage takes several seconds to load, people will leave before they see anything. Common culprits include large image files, too many plugins, and unoptimised code.

You can test your page speed using free tools like Google PageSpeed Insights. Even modest improvements, compressing images, removing unnecessary scripts, can make a difference to how many visitors stick around.

7. Tell Visitors What Happens Next

Many businesses ask visitors to ‘get in touch’ without explaining what happens after they do. Will someone call them? How quickly? What information will they need?

A short line explaining the next step, ‘We will call you within 24 hours to discuss your project’, reduces uncertainty and makes people more likely to submit the form. Clarity removes friction.

Small Changes, Real Results

You do not need to rebuild your site to improve your homepage. Start with the fix that seems most relevant to your current weaknesses. Test one change at a time, and pay attention to whether enquiry numbers shift.

If your homepage already looks good but still underperforms, the problem may be who your marketing is reaching rather than the page itself. But for many businesses, these seven fixes are enough to make a measurable difference.
